The students will engage in an authentic learning event called The Medieval Market Living Museum. With Social Studies as an anchor subject, students will learn about medieval England, specifically Coventry in 1395. The learning during this four week authentic unit culminates into an open house in which the students become trades people of that era. They will produce a project/tool directly related to a medieval trade, dress in costume of that period and create a market stall that they can do their trade in. As well, students will learn some sayings of that period and be instructed to dramatize the behaviours and attributes of their chosen medieval trade. Other extensions that have worked very well for this unit has been field trips to Casa Loma and Medieval Times in Toronto. Students have also learned medieval folk dances during physical education times and medieval recorder songs during music.
